Garfield is one of the world’s most popular cats ever, as more and more generations of children and adults can’t seem to get enough of this character and his interesting world, which started as a comic strip. After becoming the most popular comic strip in the world, as it is the most syndicated one, it had broken into the mainstream through all sorts of other media, such as countless television shows, two cinema movies, lots of video games, and, as you can see here, plenty of fun!

The comic strip started in 1978, which is forty years ago from the moment of this writing, which is quite a testament to how popular it is. The creator is Jim Davis, who wanted to create a character that everyone could relate to, in a way, and be popular all over the world, which he certainly achieved doing. The comics are really simple, funny, and don’t delve into politics or any other things of that manner, which is why it is very easy for everyone to love them.

Who are Garfield and his friends?

The cat and the main protagonist is an orange cat, which is why you can see many cat-owners whose pet is orange naming their cat like that. He is quite overweight, but that is not at all surprising since he is lazy by nature, he hates any kind of diet or doing exercise, and loves to eat nothing more but lasagna, and he is also quite the coffee-drinker. One of the main attributes of him that everyone relates to is the fact that he really, really hates Mondays. Don’t we all? He cares for both his owner, John, as well as the other pet, Ollie, the dog, but he probably cares the most for Pooky, his teddy bear.

Finally, we’ve got the second pet of the family, the lovely Ollie, who is a dog, so it is not at all surprising that our cat does not like him at first. Still, Ollie is a lovable dog, and a loving dog even more, as he really adores his bigger brother. Ollie has yellow fur and brown ears and is quite small in stature. Ollie is the only character in the series not to talk, because he is depicted as a normal dog, but can express a lot through his mannerisms. Ollie and Garfield might have a rocky relationship, but they are still best friends, despite that!
 

The shows and the movies

Because of the huge popularity of the comic strips, we’re not at all surprised that the franchise developed further, as so far there have been a number of television specials, three animated shows with the fourth one in development, and two feature movies.

The first animated series for the franchise was Garfield and Friends, which also had segments of U.S. Acres, another comic strip from the same creator. The show ran for seven seasons. It was a simple show featuring the antics of these characters, with a lot of the stories having been adapted from the comic strips themselves.

This show is probably the version that you are most familiar with, that aired from 2009 to 2016, and re-runs of it are still going strong. What was different and special for this one was that it was a CG-animated show. It is set in a different universe from the first series and follows the adventures of the characters in their day-to-day lives.

The Original Show was a short series of 12 episodes produced and airing primarily in French, in 2019, with the episodes being three minutes max, featuring short stories in the quickies format. In 2020 it was announced that he is joining the Nickelodeon family, with an animated series currently announced and in production for the network, and we can’t wait to see it!
